The last two months have been CRAZY, amazing, overwhelming, humbling and a whole lot of hard work!
Two months ago, I jumped right into a full-blown business. I say that because when it launched, it took off! I had no time to develop a system and I was learning as I went instead of in advance! It had its benefits, but if I could go back and do it all over again, there would most definitely be systems in place beforehand. No one enjoys the stress of a million files on their desktop!
This is the perfect time to give a MASSIVE shout out to my lovely friends and family for being supportive and allowing me to put blinders on! Which apparently was entertaining to my partner Brad, who enjoyed making funny faces at me while I was writing or working on my website… I had no idea until he informed me after the fact. Where’s a camera when you need one?
Cue JT singing “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and join my dance party because, I AM THE BOSS! Therefore, I can have a dance party whenever the occasion calls for it! Which is right now (Take 2 minutes to put on your favourite jam and dance it out!)
Now on to the challenging part… there is only one person to answer to and rely on… me. If there is a problem, me. If something doesn’t work properly, me. If my calendar is overbooked, me. You get the idea. This is certainly NOT a complaint, merely a realization.
I now have to cultivate my own relationships with others who I don’t see every day. Do you know what that means? Networking! Yes, that terrifying word everyone seems to hate.
Truthfully, it’s not that bad. Once you find the right people, it just makes sense. They become your safety net, your kind-of not really co-workers.
When it came to my daily routine I didn’t know where to start. I had to develop my own structure and my own style. Which I have to admit was fun, although not always easy! I didn’t know if I should work on my social media strategy or write a blog post, finish my website or set up for a product photo shoot, work from home, visit a coffee shop or work by the pool.
I didn’t even have my desk set up properly at the time! To all those solo entrepreneurs out there, I know you understand!
What was the secret to my success? Refusing to barf during my first ever client meeting or deciding on my pricing strategy?
I had nightmares about my pricing strategy. Seriously. Full blown night terrors.
Eventually I realized there is no RIGHT way to create a pricing strategy. You just have to start somewhere. What are you comfortable with? How are others in your field pricing their services? Who is your dream client? How much would YOU be willing to pay for YOUR services? Never undervalue yourself and just be true to your knowledge and success. There’s no such thing as “fake it till you make it” with your own business. You have to DO THE WORK! (Thanks, Being Boss Podcast)
With eight client meetings under my belt, a website up a running (which reminds me, it needs an updated!), my pricing strategy in place and money in my bank account I could finally breathe. Or at least until my next appointment or engagement session.
Have you considered starting your own business?
Tips to get YOU started!
- Build your website: Be You! What do your clients want to see? What do they need to know? A website is not static! Make sure it grows as you do!
- Business cards are NOT old school!!! Get them!
- Update ALL social media accounts and consider the vibe you’re pushing out into the world.
- Find your people! Whether they are friends who also own a business or you’re joining a networking group, find someone to bounce ideas around with, someone to vent too (because we ALL need a sounding board).
- Invest or use an accounting software and open a business account! (WAVE Accounting is FREE!)
- Find the tools that work for you! (Blog post on this soon!)
- Challenge yourself.
- Invest in your work. Not everything is free.
- Always say YES!
- Be a #BOSS
- DO THE WORK!
I am SO very excited for this next chapter and CAN’T WAIT to share all my thoughts, failures and successes with you! As a new solo entrepreneur trying to live a minimalist lifestyle, get ready for a bit of crazy and a lot of dance parties!
